5 Characteristics of a Karate-Ka (student)
1. Courtesy (礼 – Rei)
The practice of showing respect and kindness to others, regardless of rank, status, or differences. In the dojo, courtesy is bowing to your instructor, treating training partners with care, and showing gratitude for the opportunity to learn.
2. Humility (謙虚 – Kenkyo)
Recognizing that there is always more to learn, no matter your skill level. Humility means setting aside ego, accepting correction, and valuing the contributions of others.
3. Self-Control (自制 – Jisei)
The ability to master your emotions, impulses, and reactions—whether in the dojo, at home, or in conflict. In martial arts, this means using skills responsibly, avoiding unnecessary fights, and staying calm under pressure.
4. Courage (勇気 – Yūki)
The strength to face fear, difficulty, or pain without giving up. Courage in training is pushing past limits, standing up for what’s right, and facing challenges with determination.
5. Integrity (誠 – Makoto)
Doing what is right even when no one is watching. Integrity is keeping your word, being honest in your actions, and holding yourself to the highest standard of character.
